Salamander

A mythical animal had little in common with what is nowadays known as the salamander.  Originally it was a reptilian animal, associated with fire. Salamanders were were often portrayed with mammalian features, and Chinese clothing woven from azbestos was originally considered to have been made of salamander hair which made them fireproof. www.wired.com/wp-content/uploa…

Combining mammalian and reptilian features naturally brought to my mind mammal-like reptiles and the most iconic of them, a dimetrodon. I have enhanced both it's reptilian features, adding a serpentine tongue as wel as mammalian, giving it long and coarse hair.

The flamethrower sail would serve two functions mostly. First it would allow bloodless competition between the males; Basically the females would easily identigy the strongest males by most impressive fire show these can produce. Secondary function would be defense from aerial attacks.
