Lovecraft - Bhole of Pnath

Description

The Bholes of Pnath were often associated with Dholes of Yaddith from what I've seen... I have decided to play on that idea a bit.

Bhole is the lesser subspecies that uses the bones lying in the Vale of Pnath as camouflage; therefore no one has ever seen them as they were mistaken for piles of bone. Bholes achieve that with modified mucus that allows bones to stick to them. It is a bit similar to what some bugs do:

Lovecraft - Dhole of Yaddith, Redesigned

"At last far below him he saw faint lines of grey and ominous pinnacles which he knew must be the fabled Peaks of Thok. Awful and sinister they stand in the haunted dusk of sunless and eternal depths; higher than man may reckon, and guarding terrible valleys where the bholes crawl and burrow nastily.
(...)
Now Carter knew from a certain source that he was in the vale of Pnath, where crawl and burrow the enormous bholes; but he did not know what to expect, because no one has ever seen a bhole or even guessed what such a thing may be like. Bholes are known only by dim rumour, from the rustling they make amongst mountains of bones and the slimy touch they have when they wriggle past one. They cannot be seen because they creep only in the dark. Carter did not wish to meet a bhole, so listened intently for any sound in the unknown depths of bones about him"

Odd. My Arkham edition of AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS has "dholes" in the story DREAM-QUEST where Randolph Carter was dropped by a night-gaunt into the Vale of Pnath. Maybe the original manuscript was mis-read. A later edition of the books were offered with errors corrected, but, as the originals were expensive and discounts were NOT offered for turning in the old editions in exchange, I never got the new ones.

I do know that dholes devastated Yaddith eons ago, and Peterson's Guide to Mythos Monsters tells the connection bet bhole and dhole.

(Also in Gary Myers' THE FEAST IN THE HOUSE OF THE WORM, the old host tells his guests what a dhole looks like. Men went home insane !
